As a result of being fatally wounded in the final days of the American Revolutionary War, Alex fails to respond to Hector's desperate call to be rescued from yet another mess that he had gotten himself into.
Rahab, who rushes to her father's aid, is furious with Alex for his dereliction of their agreement to protect her father from harm, punishes him severly by transferring his mind just before his physical death.
The host body that she chooses is that of a young woman who had just been sold by her parents to an older manseeking a fertile girl as a breeding mare. Alex, confined in the girl's body as though it was his own, suffers rape and constant beatings by the brutal man that he had been sold to for the price of a cow.
The punishment continues for the next fifty years as Rahab transffers Alex's mind from one horribly abused woman to another. Alex swears to pay Rahab back for his long years of misery and hones his unusual powers throughout it until he is finally able to escape his horrific torture and exact his revenge upon Rahab.
