Reverend Thornton Randolph raises a family with 6 children in a small Appalachian town in the mid-1950s. When he learns his eldest daughter Abby is pregnant, he holds the neighbor’s son Buck Simpson responsible, marries them in a shotgun wedding and runs them into exile to hide the shocking truth.
After six years of isolation from her family, Abby gathers her two children and enough courage to board a bus for home. She still fears her father, but once home, Abby learns her father is dead and only her emotionally cool mother and Abby’s autistic sister remain on the failing family farm. The return and murder of Buck Simpson and his neer-do-well crony brings suspicion on the entire Randolph family.
Abby struggles to support her children, to win her mother’s love, to regain the love of her old beau—all against the backdrop of an economically depressed, geographically isolated Southwest Virginia town.
