1587 and the Spanish are assembling la Felicisimma Armada, a great fleet of warships, to attack beleaguered England. Branan is shot, falls into the sea and is rescued by John Tudor, who takes him to London. Over time Branan transforms from rough peasant into an Elizabethan gentleman, while Catherine gradually loses her fine clothing and manner to become an islander struggling to survive a harsh and unforgiving environment.. But Branan never forgets his promise to save her.
