Gothic novel House Wayward follows four unpublished novelists who find refuge from the busy schedule and noise of city life by moving to a small town. Their new home rests atop a hill, called Hill House by the townspeople. The friends--Charles, Rizz, Jake, and Vicki--go about their days joking, laughing, and exploring the quiet area. Eventually, they learn that Hill House is a retirement community and surmise that the real estate agent had been desperate to sell.
As suitcases are unpacked and furniture is bought and arranged, the house begins to creak and crack and groan. Thereafter, strange, inexplicable events precipitate and fears are manifested.
Meanwhile, Charles forms an unrequited romantic interest for Rizz. As the days go by and his advances are subtly rejected, Charles' pining intensifies until it grows uncontrollable.
