Cruel & Unusual

Cruel & Unusual begs the question whether America's penal system makes any serious attempt at rehabilitation or whether punishment is its main goal. Once Patricia Krenwinkel was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for the Manson Family murders, what is the purpose of a lifetime of incarceration? Simply punishment? If so, why not execute her and get it over with.
