Born into the colorful world of Polish Jewish immigrants during the Great Depression, a young man rejects his religious upbringing and embraces dreams of becoming a Dostoyevsky. Sexual awakenings and the death of friends and relatives precede his journey across America to a Midwestern university where he discovers the magic of theatre. Torn from his studies he is thrust into the war in Europe where he encounters firsthand the horrors of battle. On leave, he explores his sexuality, and falls in love.
