A teenage boy's life is turned upside down during the hot Oklahoma summer of 1972 in this comfy coming-of-age narrative. Hitch is a tiny town down on its luck, still reeling from Vietnam and the shock of Watergate. Young Jimmy Hearns is primarily engaged in dodging the belt of his brutal father; so when his long-suffering mother gets him a job teaching an elderly black man, Moses, to read, he is only too glad to get out of the house. Moses gives Jimmy his first taste of religious faith and racial tolerance. After a tragedy befalls Jimmy's father, the family find themselves living with a monster-a broken man whose last hope has been shattered. Reading Lessons is about two very different people with a passion for reading and the impact that they have on each other. The issues of child abuse, racism, illiteracy, and spirituality are ambitiously handled in this thoughtful, heartfelt novel.
