Mark Matthews, a happily married husband and father, has always led two lives. Outwardly he’s Mr. Dependable, a staid, conventional provider. Inwardly he’s an avid reader and psychic explorer. Mark teaches high school English in Cold Springs, a sleepy town in rural Michigan, and has no trouble keeping his inner and outer lives separated, until a mysterious visitor materializes in his life.
The visitor, Albert, tells Mark they are ancient friends. He offers Mark the opportunity to visit an Alternate reality where Mark can learn, beyond the skill of lucid dreaming, the art of lucid living.
Albert warns Mark, however, that his Alternate-reality visit will have far reaching consequences on his everyday life and should not be taken lightly. He promises to return for Mark’s decision and disappears as mysteriously as he manifested.
Mark is naturally shocked and confounded. He wants to believe Albert is real, and longs to go with him, but he is also well aware of his family and job obligations. Albert’s warning about life-changing consequences disturbs him. He is also uncomfortably aware that sane men don’t experience visitors materialized from nowhere.
After several agonizing days, Albert makes a late night return; and against his considered judgment Mark wakes up the next morning on the Ranch, a verdant, space-aged complex in the middle of a desert – a location, Albert informs him, that doesn’t exist on any map.
Mark’s adventures on the Ranch include lunch with Marilyn Monroe, at the apex of her physical beauty, brunch with Salvador Dali, and coffee and Danish with Albert Einstein. Mark is re-immersed in physical reality for a brief tour of an earth-interdiction spacecraft where he gains the perspective of several extraterrestrial crew members, foremost of whom is Leah, a stunningly beautiful Pleiadean woman. Returning to the ranch, Mark has a final spiritual encounter before returning to Cold Springs.
Interlaced with Mark’s adventures on the Ranch is the traumatic experience of his wife Meredith, a beautiful black Irish woman, who must hold her family together while she tries to come to grips with Mark’s without trace or warning disappearance.
Meredith enlists the help of the local sheriff, handsome, square-jawed Whitman Stone. Whitman is as personally conflicted by Meredith’s beauty as he is professionally intrigued by Mark’s inexplicable disappearance.
When Mark returns to Cold Springs as abruptly as he disappeared, Meredith, Whitman, Mark, his children and his career, all begin to undergo the life-changing consequences Albert had foretold.
