For the record, Gibson Hendricks never thought her family was normal. But she also couldn't figure out why it mattered. They don't eat meat or go to church, and her Vietnam vet dad stays home to take care of the kids.
When they leave California in the 80's for "the good life" in Oregon, she tries harder to ignore her family's idiosyncrasies. And she's even developing some of her own, in the hopes of a Hail Mary rescue from the Dukes of Hazzard or that Drew Barrymore could be her best friend.
Gibson reluctantly gets a real best friend, plays Love Boat, and then entertains the idea of getting an apartment but things start to get complicated. Some friendships can't be explained and it suddenly becomes more important than ever to be normal and fit in.
She begins sixth grade, determined to turn over a new leaf but a split second decision only reinforces that she is not altogether ready to leave childhood behind.
