The Gadfly

A play that imaginatively reconstructs the life of Socrates in ancient Greece. The reader is taken from the battlefield where he fought, to the agora where he discussed philosophy, to the law court where he was tried and sentenced to death. The colorful life of Athens is depicted, famous figures make a guest appearance, and a romantic episode is described involving a courtesan (heterae). Socrates comes alive in this work of true fiction.
