*****
This edition of The Lowrie History includes a number of transcribed American newspaper articles that recount the terror wreaked by Henry Berry Lowery and his associates, as well as a brief Further Reading section as a jumping-off point for additional research.
*****
Shortly after the Hatfield & McCoy feud began along the West Virginia / Kentucky border, the Lowery Gang was formed in response to the executions of patriarch, Allen Lowery, and his son, William in 1865. Led by Henry Berry Lowery, the gang terrorized Robeson County, North Carolina, robbing, murdering, and generally wreaking havoc. Some view the Lowery Gang as Robin Hoods or Rob Roys standing up for their rights which had been violated. Others see them as outlaws hell-bent on inflicting harm for the sake of doing so. Regardless of which view you take, their story is one of fighting, bloodshed, and intrigue until Henry Berry’s death and the dissolution of the gang.
