This is another volume in our continuing effort to document the early history of baseball in the District. This edition covers the period when baseball level of baseball played falls to one of the lowest points in the District’s long history.
The1890 and 1891 seasons can be justly called the Dark Ages, for during this time base ball fell to its lowest level, even lower, in our opinion, then the periods of 1881 to 1883 and 1972 to 2004. This volume documents the actions and inactions of Walter Hewitt. The passing of his father leaves the young and inexperienced Hewitt a magnate in the powerful League. But the Players Rebellion generates a tsunami that will greatly undermine the popularity of the game in Washington. Of particular interest to readers is the attempt to play the first Sunday game in the Washington Metropolitan area. The first base ball game will not be played in Washington until 1918.
“Baseball in the District,” is the title we have assigned to our project to document the early history of baseball in Washington DC. This book documents the 1890 season. This book like others in the series is written in chronological narrative, every game is covered. Local papers and sporting publications are used. This is how the players were viewed in their own time. Information about players the reader may not be aware of is referenced. Historical events are presented as they happened.
Our series about baseball in Washington, “Baseball in the District,” includes the following titles. Most are available as e-books at Barnes & Noble. Hard copy available upon request. Karen and I have been avid baseball fans and enjoy traveling the country taking in ball games at all levels. Comments suggestions, email us at
