PAH Pharmacotherapy: Progress in the Modern Treatment Era

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare and debilitating condition that ultimately leads to progressive right-ventricular failure and premature death. There is no cure for PAH. However, achievements in therapeutics and the evolution of management strategies for PAH over the past decade have established a ‘‘modern treatment era.’’ It is increasingly evident that PAH patients in this era are less functionally impaired and are living longer.
The 2 articles in this supplement will provide an overview of the etiology, pathophysiology, and classification of PAH. The authors will describe the evolving therapeutic landscape, with a review of currently approved therapies for PAH and a discussion of emerging agents that target both existing and new disease pathways.
