A brave and smart lady’s maid, a gentleman’s valet, a scheming woman, scoundrels, grave robbers, a brave soldier, a devoted wife, and gypsies are just some of the supporting cast to the handsome, wealthy marquis and his young, beautiful wife. This is a story of one ambitious, relentless woman’s attempt to become the marchioness regardless of the obstacles in her path. There are many plot twists and unexpected interactions amongst all the players that keep the story interesting through to the final page.

Although there is no author named on the title page, HathiTrust Digital Library credits the work to Catherine Sinclair (1800–1864). Miss Sinclair was a Scottish novelist and is best known as a writer of children’s works. She has many titles to her credit and a monument erected to her memory in Edinburgh. “The Woman in Black” is one of her later novels.

Here is an excerpt:

She walked to the toilet-table. The wax-lights were extinguished; she relighted them. She tried on the handsome ear-rings, the necklace—she sank down in the marchioness’s easy-chair, and gazed at herself in the mirror.

“I feel, as I see these gems sparkle on my brow, and as I sit in this chair and at this table, as if I were already the marchioness I will one day be. I have not her baby-face, with its white and peach-blossom tints, but I have thought, passion, mind. She is half broken-hearted about her calf-love for that silken sybarite. She may die of grief; if not, she must, she shall, resign, either by divorce or by (ah! be still, busy, plotting brain, there is time enough yet!) one way or another. I swear that, come what will of her, I will one day be his wife, mistress in this house—Marchioness of Windermere!”
