They say every time they drive down Highway 40, they turn their heads away from River Road.
One little girl and a little boy had asked him to do something, to protect them, to get them out of a hell they were living in at home. He did.
The Cosentino family used to mean something, but that's not what Christian thought when he took on the name to protect his friends. Emily and Derek were just two little kids that were wrapped up in a family without hope. He gave his heart, and everything he had to go with it, to make sure this little girl and this little boy would be safe, just like his father had taught him. They were his friends, and he protected them, loved them even.
And now, they were living a great life, loving each other like no boy and girl ever could, while he was still sitting between some white bricks and bars with too many years he'd never get back. He wasn't a kid anymore.
He didn't know if they'd ever forgive him, or thank him. They didn't call. They didn't write, and they surely would never visit a place like this. He'd never see them again, so it didn't matter, he thought. Until one day, somebody from his roots decided to come back, someone who could give Christian back the life he was groomed into living.
Today, things were going to be different. He was going to get out and see these two kids again, see how they grew up. But Emily and Derek had a different idea.
