“I don’t remember you being this flirtatious when we were in school,” I said, thrilled.
“Oh, I was. But you never noticed.”
“I think I would have noticed.”
“It’s good you didn’t. I was awful back then.” He turned away from me to the stove, stirring and tasting. I enjoyed the chance to check him out. His broad shoulders narrowed to a perfect butt. A tattoo was barely visible on his right forearm, but I could see that it was a bit faded. I wondered how much ink he had. “Hungry?”
I wasn’t really hungry for food, but I nodded. Sam had a very small table set, so I took a seat, charmed that he’d folded pieces of paper towel into napkins. I placed mine on my lap and let him serve me. He lit a candle and I smiled. This has to be a date. When he sat down, his knee bumped mine.
“Sorry,” he said. “Tight quarters.” He touched my knee with his hand as if in apology and I drew in a breath. Our eyes met and held.
When Sam spoke again, his voice was different. Huskier. “You know, Lily, I used to think about this. Touching your legs under the table.”
His hand stayed on my knee, caressing it. I fought the urge to open my legs and encourage him to explore.
“I…I thought about that, too.” I admitted.
“No way. You were always so business-like. Focused on our homework.” He smiled, his fingers now under my knee, almost tickling me, but not quite.
“I didn’t want you to fail,” I said. Actually, I’d just been too chicken to try anything with him. I’d been terrified of my own lust then, and of his terrible reputation. I was still a little afraid now.

What had I done? What had I said? I knew some of our teachers had written Sam off as a loser who never applied himself, but I’d never thought that, not once. I’d always known he was very smart and very bored by high school. I took a small bite of my carbonara and sighed. Of course it was delicious.

His forthrightness startled me. His tone was serious. I decided to be honest. Why lose another five years? I wanted him more than I’d ever wanted anything. Then. Now. Probably always.
“Yes. Very.”
“Good. Then I propose a fun little game.”
“A game?” If I was confused before I was utterly flummoxed now. What was he talking about?
