The son of a celebrated Free Church minister in Scotland, Maurice Nicoll (1884-1953) studied at Cambridge, where he gained a 'First' in science. He qualified as a doctor at St Bartholomew's hospital in London and then travelled to Paris, Vienna, Berlin and finally Zurich where he became a colleague of Carl Jung. The psychological insights of Jung left a lasting impression on the young Nicoll.

Nicoll wrote at the time... The outlook of the Swiss school differed so fundamentally from that of the Austrian school that disunion was inevitable.

In England and America many people are familiar with the Freudian teachings. I shall feel justified in producing this book if it enables its readers to regard the dream, in some degree, from Dr. Jung's standpoint, and I desire to place on record here the debt that I owe personally to Dr. Jung.

Nicoll said that meeting Carl Jung was the first important event of his life and they continued to remain lifelong friends.
