From Chapter 1: I was born in 1928 in the heart of Europe on the border between Austria and Switzerland, a truly beautiful spot. To the north lies Lake Constance, the border between Austria and Germany on that particular stretch. Towering mountains formed the border to the south, between Austria and Italy. My birthplace, Sulz, was at the furthermost western end of Austria.
