A meteor is about to destroy planet Entamida, a light year from Earth. Gano and Elantra with their children Lee and Broni escape to Earth through a wormhole in time-ship, TC. They befriend General Simons who offers US citizenship for their help reproducing TC. Overcoming language and religious problems, they bring others from Entamida and eventually carve out a comfortable life in the US.
