I blinked stupidly, then understood her intent. I grabbed my purse before getting to my feet.

"No." She pointedly looked at my chair. "You can do it here."

I slowly sat down and glanced around. The restaurant was only half-filled, the harpist playing pianissimo, the conversation reserved. I adjusted the napkin on my lap and scooted closer to the table.

I peeled back the hem of my skirt, trying not to wriggle too much and draw attention to myself. With a few tugs, I wrestled them off my hips. Once they were past my knees, I used my heels to hook them off one leg and then the other, rolling them up and stuffing them into my purse.

"Show me," she said.

I brought my purse up and opened it so she could glance inside. Amelia nodded, and I put my purse aside.

"You've got some work to do, if you want dessert."
