The Living Needle

In the beginning of the trilogy, Artemis looks back on a lost relationship with Meek, a quiet, powerful, world-changing boy whose ability to redefine the fundamental laws of the universe may have triggered the process of the apocalypse. To Artemis, it is only a heartbreak, and as the world changes around her, she is in denial that she may be the one to save it. Instead, she wants to settle into a boring job and with a regular boyfriend, Cain who is afraid their relationship is actually falling apart. However, when all the world's scarecrows suddenly come to life -- including Mr. Sprinklers, the scarecrow on Artie's father's farm -- Artemis must choose between embracing her childhood chaos, rejecting it in favor of the stability of normalcy, or embracing her messianic destiny. Meanwhile, Cain and Mr. Sprinklers are just trying to figure out what it means to be human in this forever changed world.
