In this old-fashioned whodunit Barrington Shakeshaft, a retired English eccentric with a colourful past, applies his own bizarre and unconventional methods to the investigation of a schoolboy's murder. Frustrating the police and infuriating the journalist with whom he works he, nonetheless, comes up with a most unexpected solution to the crime.
