By 1933 Ellie feels more content. Her twins are leaving home for further education and she and Garth are looking forward to the coming birth of another family member. But, history appears to be repeating itself when Ellie discovers her spoiled daughter Amelia has acted shamelessly with a young, sugarcane farmer’s son.
Amelia’s marriage to Marcus McBride follows quickly. They move to a sugarcane plantation to begin their married life on Maroochy View farm, which both sets of parents have purchased for the young couple.
Amelia struggles with her new role of sugarcane farmer’s wife, by having to learn to manage and complete household chores single-handedly, while Marcus works to set the neglected farm to rights. Letting her pampered upbringing influence her marriage taints it from the beginning.
When her new husband falls gravely ill, Amelia is shocked to learn that his illness is terminal.
Amelia appoints a manager to take charge of the plantation and she withdraws from society and returns to live with her parents in Bundaberg.
For years she remains quietly at home taking care of her son, Seth. She fills her time with charitable works and baking for soldiers who have enlisted in the armed forces. Many Australian men have been posted overseas to fight World War 2 on foreign soil. Her motivation becomes more driven when her twin, Jeremy, enlists as a qualified medical doctor.
Through life’s unexpected, and sometimes sad and tragic circumstances Amelia has been molded into a thoughtful and caring young woman with a genuine heart for people who are least able to fend for themselves.
When her mother’s half-sister, Hannah, leaves Australian shores to go to the New Hebrides with her husband, who has been appointed an advisor to the American servicemen and women based there, Amelia takes Seth and journeys to see them. She meets a man who stirs her so passionately that she can’t get him out of her mind.
When Amelia and Harry’s relationship develops past the friendship stage, a hidden secret is unearthed, which impacts on every member of the Williams and Turner family.
Will she find lasting happiness in the islands? Does Ellie ever return to Port Vila? What is the startling news in store for the Williams family in the final chapter of the Island Series?
The answers are found in the pages of the book.
