Eleven-year-old Angel is trying to maneuver her increasingly messy childhood. Her mother's husband hunting, the nuns at school are mean; there's a steady stream of potential new step-parents.
There's also her father, Ray. He's an awful parent, but Angel holds out hope that he'll change. The hope grows stronger when he hints of buying her a special gift, one that could transform her entire life.
