Janet is the youngest daughter of two daughters of the Smith family. The Smith's are social climbers. Part of the new rich. Mr. Smith is known to play both sides to make a profit. The Smiths are being shunned by the Royal family. The Smith family lives next to the Duke's Family, a titled family. Janet's older sister Margaret is currently going with John. They are lovers. Janet up to now has had little interest in John, other than to steal into her sister's bedroom and watch them together.
