(Short Stroy) Danger on the high seas. When the weather turns snotty, a fine April sail up the Oregon coast turns nasty. Cold water and hot tempers mix together into a lethal, swirling brew.

The weather along the Oregon and Washington coasts in April is usually a mix of good and bad. There are delightful spring days and stormy wintery days. More often than not, the weather is unsettled, and what seems to be a solid forecast turns out to be wishful thinking.

The good days temp people out. If the weather changes suddenly, which it can, they can find themselves in something of a nautical pickle. When the weather turns sour, the urge is to head in; however, the river and bay bars can become very rough, dangerous to cross. Under these conditions the only sane thing to do is to check with the Coast Guard, which can, if necessary, escort a vessel back in or direct her to the nearest safe port. Often, however, it's determined that the best thing to do is to stay out and ride it out.
