On her eleventh birthday Anah received a red leather notebook from her favourite Aunty. It became a diary, a place for her secrets and for the next five years Anah tells of her life in Nijmegen and the war which creeps into every aspect of her existence. We watch Anah and her family negotiate the Nazi presence but still maintain a covert defiance as ordinary people experience extraordinary events.
