With her best friend gone and targetted by the school bullies, Caroline isn't enjoying school. As her holiday ends and a new term looms, she discovers a toy monkey in an airport toy vending machine. With eyes as black as treacle, it stares out, imploring to be rescued. Named Carlotta, Caroline brings her to England and soon the mysterious monkey triggers a chain of events that change everything.
