EXCERPT:
She was rebellious in a good way. She was adventurous and wild. She was exotic and unique in a way I couldn’t describe if I tried. I might idealize her because she was my first, but I don’t think so. I think it’s because she was so Ronnie.
I met Ronnie (she hated being called Veronica) my freshman year in college. We were in English 101 together. Yes, I started college a virgin. I wanted to get laid and I wanted it bad, but something always happened to keep me from closing the deal. Usually, I was the problem. It’s not that I was repulsive. Girls said I was good-looking, but I was shy. I didn’t have the self-confidence to go for it.
Ronnie was a stereotype of the rebellious teenager. She was a cute little bundle of energy, always looking for the next cause to join or protest to lead. I was the quiet guy that everyone thought was a mellow old soul. That façade kept them from seeing I was painfully self-conscious.
