Sent away from her island home to Port Vila, the main town of the New Hebrides, Ellie struggles to comply with the rules that apply to her nursing training. Having Dr. Garth Williams, the stern registrar of the British hospital as her tutor, Ellie is prevented from making contact with her fiancé Tari, until her nursing training is complete. Over time, being forced to face unusual circumstances beyond their control, the doctor and Ellie develop an amicable relationship. He becomes an influential part of Ellie’s life when she reluctantly leaves the shores of the New Hebrides.
