Jane's been on plenty of deep space missions before, although never one this far out--it never even occurred to her to wonder why this particular mission is so heavily armed. When the crew encounters an unknown life form in deep space that turns every human on the ship into a sex-crazed animal, Jane is the only one left to save the ship--and perhaps the whole human race.
