1730 Etienne Bastarache has many lifeskills for his duties as a soldier. But he had an ability to corrupt some of those who are closest to him. He is found dead of either suicide, as the priest believes, or murdered. His body has a bullet wound to the forehead, part of a rope hanging from a tree limb above him, and, a knife in his back and in his heart. New France's legal system is ill equipped.
