Given the opportunity of a lifetime, Debbie Huggett can't wait to create a perfume for Ka¢entra, the famous pop star. Even after the demanding diva makes her life a living hell, she struggles to create the perfect scent. Little does she know how the perfume will affect the celebrity – or all of the men in her life – as the Zombie Apocalypse begins….
From WORLD WAR ME:
Even now, after the Zompocalypse and everything that happened, the first question people want to ask me is, what was Ka¢entra really like? You know, back when she was featured on all of those magazine covers, in the days before she became an evil, brain-eating monster?
Fame is kind of funny in that way. After all that happened, after civilization trembled and a good portion of the population became Eaters, inquiring minds still want to know. No matter what happens, we enjoy our gossip.
I used to feel exactly the same way. When my boss came to me, wanting to know if I’d like to work with a celebrity, I was delighted to get the opportunity. I wouldn’t say I was ecstatic but I was definitely pleased.
My very first star. If things went well, my career would blossom.
I tried to hide my excitement under a professional veneer but Elliot picked up on it. He didn’t say a word as I shared the news with every family member in the Western Hemisphere but he didn’t let me slide, either. The next evening, I returned home to find my bedroom walls plastered with Ka¢entra posters.
In the last few days before her transformation, I spent a lot of time with her. Too much time, absolutely. I’m telling you, back in the day, back when her every word was reported on entertainment shows, Twitter, the internet, I wondered about the real person behind the public face. Like everyone in her circle, I soon found out.
At first, I was a little dazzled by her celebrity, a little intimidated by her success. As time went on – and we’re talking hours, not days – I just wanted her to let me do my job.
The Ka¢entra I came to know wasn’t all that different from the zombie she eventually became. Even before the Zompocalypse, she was an evil, soul-sucking monster.
