This book tells the story of the Bello family who were brought from Ghana in East Africa and sold into slavery in 1785 when they were bought by Edwin Epps. He owned a cotton plantation called Bayou Huff Power, a short distance from Holmesville in Louisiana, and this was where their degradation began. Epps was a cruel, evil man, who used every opportunity to make their lives a misery.
