The night was warm and the stars overhead were gorgeous, like diamonds scattered thickly across black velvet. So I laid down in the back of my pickup truck, and watched meteors streak across the sky. I felt peaceful, content with life. My only vague regret was that I had no lover to share it with me.
Suddenly a branch cracked nearby, and I heard a very male voice say, “Hello, you look like you’re enjoying yourself! May I join you?”
My heart nearly stopped, until I recognized the poor fellow my kids had knocked into the river earlier. Then my fear turned to embarrassment, until I saw him grinning at me across the fading campfire.
Laughing, I sat up, and patted the tailgate invitingly. “What brings you out this far?”
That afternoon, I’d been too embarrassed to realize how attractive Harper was. Now I was finding it difficult to think of anything else. His face was an intriguing mix of rugged features and boyish innocence, and his long body was muscular beneath his t shirt and shorts. The firelight threw every angle and curve into sharp relief. Looking at him in the shimmering moonlight made my mouth water, and my fingers itched to touch him.
The longer we talked, the more I sensed he felt the same way. He just couldn’t figure a way to broach the subject. But I noticed how he’d shift a little, and suddenly his hand would be closer to mine. Or a mosquito would buzz around us, and he’d reach really close to bat it away.
Finally I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Let’s go for a walk,” I suggested, grabbing his hand. And I daringly suggested going for a midnight swim. Skinny dipping...
