A man whose life is on the skids grows obsessed with an intricately detailed painting hanging in a bar. As his fortunes decline, the crowded, convivial dinner scene in the picture comes to seem more and more preferable to the real world. And, indeed, before long the painting begins to attain a reality all its own...
