Nathan, 9 and his sister Chloe, 6, lose their parents in a car crash. They go to live with their mother's twin sister, a loving woman who is determined to give them a good life. Her husband, however, is a social misfit of a man raised single-handedly by a religiously obsessed mother. To please her, he has married a woman, despite being more attracted to men and, tragically for Nathan, young boys.
