Synopsis
It is a hot summer day in a small Wisconsin town. As a tense and harried,
ROXY BOWMAN puts away groceries she glances at her ailing aunt ROSE, who
tries to help by stuffing a bag of apples into the stove.
"Aunt Rose, let's put those in the fridge - they're easier to get at," Roxy
tenderly states, ushering Rose away from the kitchen and into her bedroom.
Same time a stressed and edgy LYLE BOWMAN enters, gripping a beer. He's
quickly on Roxy's case about Rose living with them and not "contributing" in
anyway, as well as missing Roxy and wanting her to bed down with him in the
instant. Roxy resists his come on and reminds him that she's the only one
bringing in money, that he needs to get a job and stop drinking. "This
relationship is nearing it's finish line," she threatens as Lyle tries to
cop a smooch. "Don't test me!" she barks, and exits for another long shift
at work.
Rose soon emerges from her room and she and Lyle begin their familiar banter
as he drinks and she teeters in and out of lucidity, suffering as she does
from Alzheimers. Unbeknownst to them, they both need each other. Their neighbor, SUGI
is insistent on getting Rose out of this bad environment. Sugi has committed his love for
Rose and wants to marry her, leaving Lyle alone. Rose reminds Lyle; “It can be very lonely
with one set of footsteps.”
After Rose moves in with Sugi, a very drunk and lonely Lyle, plots a devious way to get
Rose back into his life. He quotes Rose. “It’s part of the master plan.” He also needs to
regain Roxy’s trust, so she can also move back in.
Lyle and Rose must confront the thief; Alcohol and Alzheimer’s. One can have their life
back. Lyle realizes that it takes a whole lot of courage to stop his drinking. As Lyle says,
“Courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying, I’ll try again, tomorrow.”
