The people of a county in the southern Appalachian highlands have looked to Judge Jonathan Steadings to administer justice and keep the peace among the Cherokee, the Negroes, and the white folk on their mountain for more than two decades, but when a prominent member of the community commits an unspeakable evil against a young black musician, the judge cannot give the people the justice they seek.
