Because he is a Yemeni-Canadian physician who knows the language and culture of Yemen, having been born there, Dr. Tariq Hakim is recruited by the law firm of Colin Lawler to go to Yemen to ensure the proper functioning of medical equipment purchased for the Yemeni ministry of health, by a Libyan trader in Ottawa, Canada. He first has to go to Poland to inspect the equipment which is manufactured in Gdansk, where he has an erotic encounter with a flirtatious married Danish woman. In the Yemeni capital Sanaa, where he once was a professor at the faculty of medicine, he is persuaded to examine a young recently married woman, the daughter of one of his old schoolmates, because she had developed intractable seizures. He makes a most unexpected diagnosis, which brings him into direct conflict with the director of national security. He ends up in a dark and dirty dungeon in solitary confinement being interrogated and tortured by one of his former medical students. The Danish woman hears about his incarceration through Amnesty International, where she works, and flies into Sanaa airport. Will she manage to help in a foreign autocratic backward country where women are treated as second class citizens?
