This story is based on the dramatic changes in the lives of the people living in England under Norman rule. They went from free men to virtual slaves and serfs overnight. Skel, whose family had been sold into slavery from Ireland by the Romans, becomes a master stone mason and later is sent on Crusade to Jerusalem. All the while, he plots his revenge.
