Gaia Theory

Forty years ago, freelance scientist James Lovelock got a job with NASA to detect life on Mars. Lovelock found that you didn't have to go to Mars to know it is lifeless and so was born Gaia Theory. Gaia says that the sum of earth's living systems behave like a controlling 'super-organism' that tweaks the chemistry of the ocean and the atmosphere to keep conditions just the way it likes. This raises two important questions: where do the humans fit into this scheme and would Gaia be better off without us?
