The Germans invaded Norway in April 1940 and advanced so rapidly that the gold treasury was evcuated to Britain for safe-keeping. Soldiers and volunteers fought to move 58-tons of gold to the north coast. The British cruiser sailed under air attack and 18 ingots were left behind. Three patriots loaded them on a sailboat and headed for Britain but foundered during a storm off the Cornish coast.
