The Emperor's Entertainment

Excerpt:
The Emperor smiled, and Marcus found his gaze drawn to that thin, cruel mouth. “A noble aim. Still, I have been speaking with your centurion, and it seems that a promotion might be in order.”
“It would be my honor," Marcus said.
The Emperor rose from his chair. “Look at me,” he commanded, and Marcus obeyed. He had not dared to look carefully at the Emperor before; it was like looking into the sun, too easy to stare for too long and suffer the consequences. But now his eyes could roam freely over the Emperor, his brittle blue eyes set in a face lined from battle. He was handsome, his features sharp and intelligent. He had narrow shoulders and muscular, toned arms. His hair was a dark brown, beginning to gray at the temples, and he had an undeniable dignity and nobility. “Does my appearance please you?”
Marcus swallowed. There was a fine line between praise and kissing ass. “It does not displease me.”
