Smoke and Clockwork

Twenty-year-old gearhead Ash never gets a break. He runs the family's body mod shop while his genius older sister Ember does whatever she wants, and his mother lies in an iron lung. Life gets even harder when a quake steals his mother's life. With Ember missing, Ash is left alone to pick up the pieces.

Until Ember shows up with a pair of clockwork wings grafted to her back. She considers the feat a technological success; Ash thinks it's a horror story waiting to happen. He's not wrong. Ember tells him that the wings are made from Solara, a mythical metal no one's been able to create. There's a good reason for that: Solara demands the lives of five lovers. If the Solara is real, then not only is his beloved sister a murderer, she's a high-priced target.

When Ember is captured by the wealthy Verdi, a corporate villain with dollar signs in his eyes, she's smart enough not to give up the secret of the Solara. But Ash knows, and he'll do whatever it takes to get the last surviving member of his family back. Even if it means killing those he loves to line Verdi's pockets.
