Television producer, Simon Curry, has an unexpected hit on his hands. Reality show The Happiest Couple is a ratings winner with its contestants competing to prove their wedded bliss. But Simon’s having panic attacks. Why now? Selling out was supposed to set him free.
At his age, shouldn’t he be content with his lot? So what if he’s feeling old and getting fat, he has a nice house and a happy marriage of his own.
But he’s also got a crushing mortgage, something about his wife’s sudden and urgent desire to have a baby has seriously put the wind up him and he’d really like to stop swallowing Prozac.
A visit to a therapist forces him to reluctantly re-examine the emotional disasters of his teenage years when his father disappeared and his mother took up with his best friend. Not his father’s best friend, mind you, Simon’s own best friend.
Determined to put his ship back on course, Simon hatches a plan he thinks will cure his ills. Only his unrecognised talent for self-sabotage stands in his way.
A hilarious and high-octane romp through the unreal world of reality showbiz, The Real Problem is also about family and friendship, what binds us and what drives us apart. It’s about betrayal, redemption and the corrosive effects of secrets kept for the wrong reasons.
And it’s about singing, dancing, boat building and cats.
