Clint Faraday is a retired PI from Florida who moves to Panamá. The police know of his reputation, so ask his aid in murders, starting in the tourist areas such as Bocas del Toro. Clint befriends the Indios from the first and learns to love their culture and life styles. He becomes more and more pragmatic as the series continues. The series is 61 books, most of novella length, as that has proven, so far, to be most wanted. I am living in the paradise that is Panamá and use many actual locations and base the mysteries on people and events observed here. Many places are actual. Some, in the first few books, no longer exist.
