The Brain Virus—What Our Brains don’t want Us to Know, is a short book that proposes that the whole human race has been infected by a “brain virus.” Much like a computer virus, the brain virus has rendered our brains ineffective. Uninfected brains make choices that result in love and sustainability. Infected ones do just the opposite. Their choices result in spiritual alienation and unsustainability.
Though the virus began infecting human brains ten to twenty thousand years ago, the infection has gone undetected for two reasons. Until the advent of computers and artificial intelligence, no one could ever have imagined that intelligence could be rendered dysfunctional by a virus, or in the case of the brain, and idea. Secondly, by the time we were aware of how a virus could affect intelligence, human brains were universally infected, which made the virus undetectable. Of greater concern, infected brains can organize us en masse, while uninfected ones can’t, making infected brains appear superior to uninfected ones.
Quoting The Brain Virus: “The brain virus serves us well, if we want pyramids, temples, skyscrapers, instant worldwide communications, fancy cars, air travel, and rocket ships. These are all “gifts” of mass organization. On the other hand, if we want happiness, love, sustainability, and a future for our species—as well as for many others—only the uninfected brain can light the way.”
There’s no antivirus program for the human brain, nor is there likely ever to be. Recovery will require that we comprehend how the virus transformed our way of thinking—causing us to live in fear of the future—and its consequences to our personal lives. With that comprehension, it’s then up to our subconscious minds to see their way clear of the virus. If our mind disinfects itself, we will experience the moment as an “Oh My God” epiphany. At that point, we will cease pursuing happiness in the promise of wealth and privilege. We will instead anchor our lives in relationships through which we will know happiness in the moment, while embracing a sustainable way of life.
