Desperate for allies, Dorinda Carroll sails from Domnall to the Lost World in hopes of petitioning the ancient Lendaran crown for aid against Reynard Sumner and his despotic Union. Her arrival is greeted with suspicion, however, and she soon learns that Sumner's agents have been hard at work ahead of her, even to the point of putting a price on her head. Meanwhile, outnumbered in the looming winter and with help an ocean away, rogue generals Thaine and McCree quietly disband their rebel force to stave off starvation. A waiting game ensues as the small army scatters, but the Holy Order has already waited for centuries, and its pontiff and bishops now sit poised to take full advantage of Domnall's precarious fledgling autocracy, as well as the civil unrest it has created.
