Mother Won't Come

She recalls the time when she had been standing behind her husband, Girdhar, in the courtyard of that big mansion. She remembers that the landlord was standing at the window of the second floor. He had come down and said to her, “Do you remember what I had told you?”

“Yes,” she had replied.

He had turned to Girdhar and said, “Now Lakshmi will live with me. You can take her back when you return my two thousand rupees with interest.”
